About Stray Animals
-Each year 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed because shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes.
-Approximately 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year.
- Of those, almost 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.
-According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy less than 2% of cats and only 15 to 20% of dogs returned to their owners.
-There are about 70 million stray animals living in the US.
-Of this 70 million, only about 6 to 8 cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year; according to the Humane Society of the United States.
